The Importance Your Network in Advertising (and beyond)

by Bauer Fichter, Media Thesis

I’m still early in my career, but one thing has become crystal clear – business isn’t just about what you know; it’s about who you know. In advertising, relationships don’t just help; they define your opportunities. The mentors I look up to have spent their careers building and investing in networks, and I’m following that path because I’ve seen firsthand how it drives impact – not just for individuals, but for entire communities.

  1. Personal Connections = Accelerated Growth

You can be insanely talented at what you do, but if no one knows you, your impact is limited. Business networks aren’t just mixers where people trade business cards and call it a day. They’re ecosystems where partnerships form, ideas spark, and doors open. I’ve watched my mentors build careers by being intentional about the people they surround themselves with, and now, I’m doing the same. Being in the right rooms with the right people speeds up growth – it’s that simple.

  1. Supporting Local = Elevating Your Industry

The advertising community isn’t just massive agencies and big-name firms; it’s fueled by local creative shops, independent strategists, and boutique firms. When you engage with local networks, you’re not just helping yourself – you’re strengthening the entire ecosystem.

By supporting and collaborating with your local ad community, you gain access to white-glove service, trusted partners, and a creative culture that elevates everyone. I’ve seen how businesses that invest in their local advertising scene create a ripple effect – more innovation, stronger relationships, and a better industry for everyone.

  1. Building a Legacy for the Next Generation

I’m lucky to have mentors who opened doors for me and showed me what’s possible in this industry. Now, I’m in the process of doing the same for others. Engaging in professional groups isn’t just about personal career growth – it’s about making sure the next wave of talent has even more opportunities than we did.

The best way to create lasting impact? Encourage young professionals to step up, get involved, and see the value in contributing to something bigger than themselves. That’s how industries grow, evolve, and sustain their success over time.

Final Thought: “Join a Club, Run the Club”

A fellow Philly Ad Club member once said something that stuck with me: “Join a club, [and help] run the club.” It’s one thing to show up – it’s another to invest your energy into making it better. I’m at the stage where I’m not just showing up anymore – I’m getting involved, contributing, and building something that will outlast me.

Business networks aren’t just about advancing your career. They’re about strengthening the community, pushing the industry forward, and leaving a lasting impact. So, find your people, join the conversations, and help build something bigger than yourself.
