Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation

Formalized on July 31, 2015, the Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation was created, with a 501c3 status, to provide tax-deductible contribution opportunities for its members and other interested parties. Contributions can be made in general or specifically to the various educational programs supported by the Philly Ad Club. Currently, these programs include:

Scholarships

With a variety of donation and participative opportunities, the Philly’s Future Scholarships are a major source of giving by the Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation with up to $40,000 or more in annual scholarship funding to deserving college students.

2020 marks our 10th Anniversary of the Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation partnering with the School District of Philadelphia where more than 65 volunteers from the professional ranks within the Greater Philadelphia Communications Industry conduct classroom sessions with several hundred seventh and eighth grade students each month from September through June.

Contributions to these educational programs can be made anonymously; under the contributor’s name or corporate affiliation; in the name of another person, group or organization, and/or as a memorial to a dearly departed. The Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation will also gladly accept endowment contributions as a way to provide a lasting gift to these important educational programs.

Philly’s Future Scholarship Fund

The Philly’s Future Scholarships have been in existence for many years and are a major source of giving by the Philly Ad Club and now the Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation. In past years, the organization has provided up to $40,000 in scholarship funding to 10 deserving college students.

  • Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation Sponsored– those that are funded by events and other sources provided and run by the Philly Ad Club in conjunction with the Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation.
  • Undesignated Contributions– those made by individuals or other sources for the purpose of adding funds to the overall Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation scholarship account.
  • Named Scholarships– those donations made with the purpose of honoring a specific individual, organization or cause and hence provided through the Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation.

Following are the guiding policies by which funds can be accumulated for the purpose of awarding them as scholarships under our Philly’s Future Scholarship Program.

Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation Sponsored

This includes the standard scholarship funding that has successfully been in place for a number of years.

Policy:

  • Types of events include: the Toyota Philly Ad club Scholarships, Philly Ad Club Auction, Car Raffles, and other such club sponsored fundraisers that are classified as benefiting the Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation Scholarship Program prior to the coordination of the event or activity.
  • All procedures will continue to be followed as practiced in these past events.
  • Tax deductibility for such donations will be determined by IRS rules and can be claimed by the contributors if so determined by their tax advisors.

Undesignated Contributions

This includes all donations made by one or more individuals for the purpose of adding funds to the overall scholarship account.

Policy:

  • Either single person or group contributions can be made in any denomination and will be added to the general fund to be distributed according to the standard levels of scholarships made within the current scholarship system.
  • These undesignated contributions can be made as one-time donations or as many times as the contributor wishes.
  • All contributors will be given an acknowledgment for IRS submission, as direct donations of cash to the Foundation are tax deductible (if a specific donation is made by more than one person, a complete list of contributors will be provided reflecting name, email address, and amount donated by each person).
  • Certain donations may be in property or services.
  • All cash donations are to be made by check (no credit cards or other forms of payment are to be accepted).
  • Donors will have no influence on the selection of recipients.

Named Scholarships:

This includes funds that are designated as a lump sum for the purpose of honoring a specific individual, organization or cause.

Policy:

  • Such named scholarships are to be made to the Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation in one lump sum at the minimum level of $2,500 (larger sums should be in increments that correspond with the standard levels of scholarships made within the current scholarship system).
  • It is preferred that such named scholarships be made for consecutive years and pledged for a reasonable length of time (suggested five years or more).
  • Single year named scholarships will be welcomed on a one-year basis only.
  • As all funds are required to be provided in a lump sum, the Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation asks that a list of donors (complete with name, email address, and amount contributed by each) accompany the contribution so the Foundation can issue receipts to each donor for reasons of tax deductibility.
  • These single lump sum contributions must be made by check (no credit cards or other forms of payment are to be accepted).
  • In addition, all named scholarships must be received by February 15 to be included with the other scholarships to be awarded for the same year and will be accepted at the discretion of the Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation.
  • Donors will have no influence on the selection of recipients.

Philly Ad Club TEENS Program

Join one of our teams and teach advertising at Philadelphia Middle Schools!

The Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation TEENS Program is in partnership with the School District of Philadelphia where more than 65 volunteers from the professional ranks within the Greater Philadelphia Communications Industry conduct classroom sessions with several hundreds of middle school students each month from September through June.

Specific schools are selected in the summer of each year and teams are formed with volunteers who prepare lesson plans to be used throughout the upcoming school year.

This program was founded on the premise of encouraging more inclusive demographic diversity representation within our communications industry. We do business in the Greater Philadelphia Area; we should represent this area in all aspects of operation. The students we impact are on track for completing both high school and college.

For the past number of years, the TEENS Program has been met with tremendous success. Each year, there are approximately 40 or more volunteers that continue with the program along with an additional 25-30 that volunteer to join the school teams and fill-in where needed.

The Philly Ad Club endeavors to continually inspire young public-school students to strive for a career in advertising and communications. This encouragement is gained by involving these students in exercises related to advertising and related fields of interest with the ultimate goal of bringing greater diversity and demographic representation to the Philadelphia industry.

The details of this program include:

  • Get together a team of four or more volunteers (or become part of an existing team)
  • Teams are formed in the summer to start the sessions in September
  • You or your team will be assigned to a participating middle school
  • Work with school contacts to schedule sessions during and/or after school
  • Monthly sessions of about two hours each are recommended (over the 9 months)
  • It is suggested that a minimum of two members of each team go to each session
  • This equates to as few as 8-10 hours per team member (over the 9 months)
  • Team leaders will handle scheduling and member replacements (if necessary)
  • Form a rewarding relationship with the students and the school

This program is financially supported by an annual donation from the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters, as well as generous donations from our members and others raised through the Philly Ad Club Educational Foundation TEENS Program.

Philly Ad Club Mentoring Program

Be a Mentor, Provide one-on-one guidance for mentees in our industry!

The Philly Ad Club Mentoring Program exists to connect Philadelphia’s leaders in the communications industries with up-and-coming students and young professionals. The Mentoring Program creates opportunities that enhances careers and grows professional networks.

There have been hundreds of mentor-mentee parings since the program launch in 2009. Our mentees have received job offers and promotions and have grown more confident in their work environments. This would not be possible without the determination and dedication of our mentors.

How does this program work?

Mentors and Mentees will need to apply for the program. Then a formal pairing process takes place, led by the Mentoring Committee. Mentors and mentees then work together to schedule monthly meetings to discuss career related topics. Meetings can range from coffee, office visits and shadowing, attendance at Philly Ad Club events, and other professionally related activities.

How long does the program last?

The length of this relationship is up to you. We suggest meeting four to five times over the course of several months to fully obtain the benefits of this program. There is no set end date for Mentoring Program participation, as many of our pairs often choose to continue their mentor/mentee relationships due to its mutual career-benefiting nature.

Philly Ad Club College Students Program

This program is run by a Student Committee that meets six to eight times a year to plan programs and activities in conjunction with the participating colleges and universities. The committee consists of both Philly Ad Club members and those who are involved with specific Philly Ad Club Academic Member Universities.

For many college students, a career in communications seems like an exciting opportunity. Without a doubt, the communications industry is experiencing dynamic change and explosive growth. It encompasses a number of fields, including advertising, digital, journalism, sales, social media, media planning and buying, public relations … in addition, of course, to the creative and production sides. And employment opportunities exist within virtually every type of organization.

To help area college students learn more about career options in communications and how to get started, the Philly Ad Club presents a series of seminars with expert panelist representing television, radio, newspapers, emerging technology, advertising, and public relations. Most of our panelists are not far removed from their college days, so they will be able to explain how they broke into the business, what their career path has been like, and what it takes to succeed.
