WUVP Univision 65 conducts analysis of population estimates for Philadelphia Market

WUVP Univision 65, Philadelphia’s most watched Spanish-language broadcast TV station, conducted an analysis on the newly released Geoscape population estimates. The Geoscape estimates are based on Census 2000 and other yearly governmental data.

According to the data, Philadelphia’s Hispanic population in 2010 is projected at 706,991, an increase of 23,000 Hispanics from 2009. What is more surprising is the penetration of the Hispanic market in particular age groups. For every five children under the age of 9 that live in Philadelphia, one is of Hispanic origin. These findings show that not only immigration but birth rates account for the growth in the Hispanic segment. Among Hispanics, three in four are born in the United States. Foreign born Hispanics account for less than 20 percent of the total foreign born residents in the region (18 percent). Despite the small percentage of foreign born Hispanics, Spanish-language usage at home has grown by 34 percent since 2000. About eight in 10 Hispanics are Spanish speakers. After English, Spanish is the second most used language in Philadelphia; it’s estimated that 554,518 people speak Spanish at home, followed by Chinese with 58,161 people.

Within the 18 county region that makes up the Philadelphia market, the Hispanic population has grown by 51 percent since 2000. The non-Hispanic population in the Philadelphia region has grown by two percent during the same time frame. While population growth has boomed educational attainment has also experienced growth. Since 2000, there has been a 124 percent increase in the number of college graduates of Hispanic origin. In addition, more than one in three Hispanics (34 percent) has some college education.

The new data offers a potential glimpse of what the Census 2010 analysis will show.
