LOCATION: African American Museum in Philadelphia
We are in the midst of a major crisis. Black radio, long the voice of the African-American community, is slowly eroding. Just look at New York City, home to more than 2 million African Americans. With the sale of Inner City Broadcasting, owner of radio powerhouses WBLS and WLIB, there is virtually no African-American ownership in one of the most influential cities in the world. Our voice is slowly being silenced.
But not in Philadelphia! We invite you to help protect, preserve and build WURD, Pennsylvania's only African-American talk station (and one of the few in the country), through our 900 In 90 campaign. Launched in June, this initiative is a critical way to demonstrate your commitment to progressive, culturally relevant media. And on Saturday, July 14th we are convening a group of powerful activists - all legends in the struggle -- to discuss the state of Black Radio, Media and Institutions. Titled "Say It Loud: Rediscovering Black Power" this conversation will focus on the future of Black radio.
