6abc and Boy Scouts Team up for 20th Straight Year! BEN-FM Joins 6abc for Food Drive Kick off November 2nd
For 20 years, 6abc and the Boy Scouts have teamed up to fight hunger here in the Delaware Valley. And to commemorate this milestone, the 20th year of the program, WPVI-TV will kick-off the 6abc/Boy Scouts Holiday Food Drive in grand style, with a very special day of giving. November 2nd, 6abc will host a day of fun at the Bala Cynwyd Shopping Center on City Avenue, with music and entertainment provided by BEN-fm www.957benfm.com .
From 6am-6pm, 6abc and the Boy Scouts will be outside ACME Markets at the Bala Cynwyd Shopping Center parking lot collecting food, providing information, and sharing lots of smiles. 95.7 BEN-fm will provide music from noon - 6pm, and Action News personalities will be there to say hello and promote the food drive all day long. Scheduled to appear from Action News are Monica Malpass, Adam Joseph, Matt O'Donnell, Amy Buckman, Karen Rogers, Dave Roberts, and Cecily Tynan. Campbell's Soup will also be on-site with some of their most popular products, and ACME Markets will provide refreshments throughout the day. Food collection boxes will be placed at local ACME Markets starting on November 2nd. People can drop off their donations when they visit the store.
"People have really opened their hearts to the victims of this year's hurricane season in the South. We also know that they will want to help people here at home", says Rebecca Campbell, President and General Manager of 6abc. "Kicking off the 20th year with a fun, family event is a wonderful way to raise awareness and get the food drive off to a great start".
The 6abc / Boy Scouts Holiday Food Drive is one of the nation's largest, collecting more than 115,000 pounds of food each year. And once again, there is an urgent need for infant formula and ready to eat meals. The November 2nd event will kick off the two month campaign to raise awareness, and collect food for the needy right here in the Delaware Valley. And through the end of December, Action News' Dave Roberts and Cecily Tynan will join the Boy Scouts on various outreach PSA's informing viewers how to get involved.
On November 12th, the Boy Scouts will go door-to-door to area homes. The scouts will place over 1-million food collection bags on door handles. The following Saturday, November 19th, the Boy Scouts, with the help of the Pennsylvania National Guard and the Philadelphia Police, will return to pick up the bags. Residents are asked to fill the bags with canned food or infant formula and place the bags outside their doors by 9am.
Another important component to this successful campaign is the 6abc / Boscovs Thanksgiving Day Parade! Families who come out to the parade are asked to bring cans of food with them, where the Boy Scouts will collect donations as they roll their giant wagon down the parade route. Canned food can also be dropped off at the 6abc Winter Wonderland Express Pavilion in Eakins Oval, where visitors can enjoy complimentary items from the parade's corporate sponsors.
6abc's corporate sponsors play a giant role in its twenty years of success. Beginning November 25th, and running through December 30th, people may participate by dropping off cans of food at the all 6abc / Boy Scouts Holiday Food Drive sponsor locations. Along with ACME Markets www.acmemarkets.com, this year’s sponsor locations include Boscov's Department Stores www.boscovs.com, Local Dodge Dealers www.dodge.com, and Sands Casino Hotel www.sandsac.com. Plus, this year, 6abc proudly welcomes Lays www.fritolay.com as the new transportation sponsor to help the Boy Scouts pick up food from the Acme Markets.
Another way for people to get involved starts at work. On November 30th, and running through December 31st, local companies are invited to place a food collection box at their place of business and encourage employees to donate. Companies that would like to participate may call 610-688-6900 for details.
With over 18 counties participating, and over 1100 charities served, the 6abc / Boy Scouts Holiday Food Drive is one of the largest in the nation and collects over 115,000 pounds of food each year.
The food collected will stay in the area it was donated. The food will be given to Philabundance, the Delaware Food Bank and the South Jersey Food Bank.
